Practitioner Notes
Set time limits on processes running without supervision and transfer processing to fresh components before the time limit expires.
Example 1: Configure IIS application pools to recycle every 29 hours (default) to prevent memory leaks and resource exhaustion. The application pool refreshes automatically, and users experience no downtime during recycling.
Example 2: Schedule automatic restarts of long-running services during maintenance windows. A web service that has been running for 30 days may have accumulated memory leaks — a planned restart restores clean operation before performance degradation becomes visible to users.
