Practitioner Notes
Classified media requires sanitization and destruction procedures approved by the cognizant security agency. These requirements are more stringent than CUI handling and are defined by NSA and the classification guide.
Example 1: For classified media, follow NSA/CSS EPL (Evaluated Products List) approved methods for sanitization and destruction. Use NSA-approved degaussers for magnetic media and NSA-listed disintegrators or shredders for physical destruction. Document every action on the appropriate security forms.
Example 2: Maintain a classified media destruction log that your FSO reviews monthly. Include media type, serial number, classification level, destruction method, date, and two witness signatures. Follow your classification management plan for retention of destruction records.
