Supplemental Guidance

The Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) is an example of a means by which clients can dynamically receive network address assignments.

Practitioner Notes

This enhancement requires dynamic allocation of network addresses to be tied to device identity — tracking which device got which IP address from DHCP.

Example 1: Configure your DHCP server to log MAC address-to-IP address assignments and integrate with your NAC solution so allocated addresses are traceable to authenticated devices.

Example 2: Use DHCP reservations for critical servers and network devices so their IP addresses are always mapped to their known MAC addresses in your asset inventory.
