Virtual Private Network (VPN)
A Virtual Private Network (VPN) creates an encrypted tunnel between your device and a remote network, protecting your data as it travels across the internet. For businesses, VPNs allow employees to securely access company resources from remote locations as if they were physically in the office.
VPNs are critical for remote work security — without one, data transmitted between remote workers and your network can be intercepted. For CUI protection, VPN connections should use FIPS-validated encryption and require multi-factor authentication.
Why It Matters
If your employees access CUI remotely, a properly configured VPN with MFA and FIPS-validated encryption is required. CMMC assessors will verify that remote access is secured and that VPN configurations meet security requirements.
