Defense Industrial Base (DIB)

The Defense Industrial Base (DIB) is the worldwide industrial complex that enables research and development, design, production, delivery, and maintenance of military weapons systems, subsystems, and components. It includes over 300,000 companies — from major defense primes to small machine shops — that contribute to the DoD's supply chain.

As a defense contractor, you are part of the DIB. The sector is a high-value target for nation-state cyber actors because it holds critical technology, military intelligence, and sensitive information that adversaries want to steal. CMMC exists specifically to raise the cybersecurity baseline across the entire DIB.
